I, Annette Godfrey Lambeth, have spent my career doing some of the most rewarding work I can imagine. Few people can say they enjoy their work for how rewarding and equally challenging it is, but working in education often fills these needs. In my time in education I have focused most on trying to help those children most in need, with learning disadvantages. These children, whilst often bright and talented, have illnesses such as ADHD which prevent them from getting the full benefits of the current education system. My colleagues and I have committed ourselves to trying to tackle such injustices and help create a more equal education system.

I graduated from Immaculata University with a doctorate in Educational Administration and Leadership, with a  4.0 GPA. My thesis paper for my final year was titled “Learning Style preferences for Secondary Students identified with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder”, and went on to become an important document in special education circles. The aim was to challenge and conceive new ways how to best help children with  ADHD fulfill their potential.

I spent the next 19 years of my career after graduation as a School Administrator, including Assistant Principal, Principal, Director of Special Education and Executive Director of Student Support Services. Using this experience I have been lucky enough to take part in key events in the special education calendar. I was the presenter at 2015 Colorado Association of School Executives on IEP Facilitation and also the presenter at 2016 Courage to Risk Conference on IEP Facilitation.

However, one of my proudest achievement sin the industry so far has been  developing a  Special Education Summer Symposium in an effort to recruit, retain and support new teachers to the field of Special Education. Hard work was always instilled in me as a key value by my parents. I was lucky enough to be raised to value the fruits that diligence and determination can bear, and luckily for me it has always been a natural characteristic. At school I was a focused and curious student, determined not only to achieve good grades but also learn more about the subjects we studied. For hard workers university is something of a dream environment- so much knowledge, tools and opportunities to learn and progress yourself and your skills.

Curiosity was a a value that I always held dear. I wasn’t the type of student to sit back and take in any information. I was always keen to ask questions, and know more about the subject, which may have caused me to be a real pain to some teachers! Whilst some students moaned and groaned their way through school, for me it was a world of wonders and fascinating information. In my youthful naivete, school seemed like a perfect Utopian paradise, with no problems at all. However, what did raise questions in my child’s mind was why this was not the case for everyone. For myself, I curiosity and determination meant that I clocked onto complex ideas fairly quickly. When I saw others struggling, I couldn’t really comprehend why. What I was witnessing then was the injustices of the American education system coming into play. In developing these thoughts in later life, I decided to pursue a career in education, and help make it more accessible and better for all children, regardless of ability age or background. Annette Lambeth – The Importance of a Fair Education for Every Child

Annette Godfrey LambethConservative social structures have long had a negative influence in subverting and subtly tailoring educational systems for their long term benefit. In a country in which the gap in quality between private and state schools is rapidly increasing, it seems that society is accepting that education should not be a universal right, and that it should be the most privileged who benefit from the privileges of a good education. However, a similar attitude subconsciously exists within even the parameters of state school education. As an educational administrator, it is my job to study, develop and implement changes to and encourage discussion about the educational structures in our country. In my 19 year experience working in the industry, there has been one very significant injustice which I have built a career upon trying to solve. From my perspective, one of the great failings of our current system is its inability to help all those who attend school due to its rigid structure.

Currently it is geared towards helping the brightest minds achieve their full potential and catapult them into an academic higher education. Unfortunately, the reality for many children is simply that these goals are out of reach. Especially those with special educational needs, whom I am dedicated to helping in my particular strand of work. What I and colleagues are working on on a daily basis is helping to contribute incrementally to what will over time be a monumental shift in the way we approach children’s education. We want to lay the foundations for a system that benefits all those who are involved, not just those born with the ability to achieve high academic grades.

It was this desire that led me to the creation of the Special Education Summer Symposium last summer. The development of this project had a very specific goal- to help recruit, retain and support teachers working with children who have special educational needs. The event was a resounding success, and made a small but significant success into raising the awareness of the importance of our long-term cause. By having the right teachers with the right motivations working to help children with special educational needs, we are helping evolve the system from the inside, and hope that in the future more people will appreciate the importance a more equal education system for all is.
